Transform your terra cotta pots into high fashion displays using Martha Stewart Living Specialty Paints. This is an easy and inexpensive project that can be completed in a weekend and last for several growing seasons.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
Norcal 10 in. Terra-Cotta Flower Pot
Paint brush
Primer made for terra-cotta (or other appropriate primer depending on your pot)
Martha Stewart Specialty Paint
Martha Stewart Living Aquarium Blue Glitter Paint
Martha Stewart Living Metallic Polished Silver
ScotchBlue 1 in. x 180 ft. Delicate Surface Painter's Tape
Exterior water-based polyurethane (optional)
STEP 1
Prime the pot with a primer appropriate for the material. Follow the instructions on the primer container.
STEP 2
Paint the base of the pot in Martha Stewart Living Metallic Polished Silver. Apply a second coat for a more solid appearance. Allow to dry.
STEP 3
Using painter’s tape, create lines by dividing the base of the pot into equal sections.
STEP 4
Paint the lip of the pot (inside and outside) as well as the area between the tape lines in Martha Stewart Living Aquarium Blue Glitter Paint. Apply two coats for a more solid appearance. It is better to apply two (2) lighter coats than one (1) heavy coat to minimize bleed-through under the tape. Allow to dry.
STEP 5
Remove the painters tape. Touch up any imperfections and enjoy!
STEP 6 (Optional)
If you plan to set the pot outside, seal it with a water-based, exterior grade polyurethane. Apply two or three coats in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Designer Tips:
For a more vibrant look, paint the glitter paint over a paint of a similar color. The 8 ounce tester will be a perfect size for this project. Consider using:
- Martha Stewart Living Frost Interior Paint Tester under Martha Stewart Living Metallic Polished Silver
- Martha Stewart Living Bluebird Interior Paint Tester under Martha Stewart Living Aquarium Blue Glitter Paint
Silver: Paint the base of the primed pot in Martha Stewart Living Frost for a uniform color. Apply two coats for a more solid appearance. Allow to dry. Paint the base of the pot in Martha Stewart Living Metallic Polished Silver. Apply two coats if desired. Allow to dry.
Blue: Apply the painters tape as detailed above. Paint the lip of the pot (inside and outside) as well as the area between the tape lines in Martha Stewart Living Bluebird. Allow to dry. Paint these areas in Martha Stewart Living Aquarium Blue Glitter Paint. Apply two coats if desired. Allow to dry.
Remove painters tape and finish with polyurethane if desired.
Enjoy!
