Your Leyland cypress is a great tree. It wants full sun and moderate to regular
water. It can handle a wide variety of soil and climate conditions including
If you bought your tree in a pot dig the hole about 11/2 times wider than the root
ball and slightly deeper. Mix the native soil with garden soil from The Home Depot.
Add some Osmocote to the hole. Put the tree in the hole with the top of the root ball
one or two inches above grade. Add soil mixture to the sides of the root ball.
Firm up the soil and mound it up to the top of the root ball. As you water, the root ball
will settle an inch or two.
If your tree was balled and burlaped, after you put the tree in the hole, cut the rope
away from the root ball and remove. Pull the burlap away from the trunk and stuff
down the side of the root ball. It will biodegrade over time. Add the soil mixture and
